- Summary
Welcome to Susumu USA’s brief technical presentation for the “PRG Series”, a new high power thin film chip resistor and the newest member of Susumu’s RG family. This presentation will introduce the PRG series in light of Susumu’s thin film chip resistor history and development.
Susumu was established in 1964 as a thin film resistor specialist. Since then we have been introducing innovative thin film resistors and serving virtually all segments of the electronics industry where precision and high quality resistors are required. When the RG series was introduced in 2003, it was (and still is) the best performing thin film chip resistor. In 2013, Susumu introduced the URG series, the reliability enhanced version of the RG series. Now we introduce the PRG series, which is the power-enhanced version of the RG series.
Based on performance and reliability, the original RG series is still one of the best thin film chip resistors on the market. The first series derived from the RG series was the URG series, whose long-term stability was significantly enhanced from the original RG series. The second series developed from the RG series is the new PRG series which has both long side terminals and a much higher power handling capability than the RG series.
Currently, we offer the PRG series in 3 sizes. Typically 1206 size chip resistors on the market are rated from 0.125W to 0.25W. The smallest size that can provide 1W is 2512. In the PRG series, the 1206 size provides 1W, which is 4 times the power for the typical 1206 size; the 2512 size provides 3W, which is 3 times better than that provided by the typical 2512 size.
This is the electrical portion of the PRG specification. We offer 2 absolute tolerances, 0.1% and 0.5%, and 2 TCR levels, 25ppm, and 50ppm, depending on the customers’ needs. The resistance value ranges from 2.5 ohms to 100 kohms.
This is the reliability and dimensional portion of the PRG specifications. The PRG series’ reliability specification is not compromised by the power handling improvement. The drift limit, +/-0.1% or 0.5%, is the same or better than the original RG series.
This graph illustrates how Susumu has improved its chip resistors’ power handling capability using the 1206 size as an example. The PRG series has 8 times the power handling capability of the RR series and 4 times the power handling capability of the RG series.
This shows the load life test results of the PRG series. Even though load life maximum drift is specified at +/-0.1% (1000ppm), typically the drift is only 1/10 of the specification (0.01%, 100ppm).
A similar situation is demonstrated for temperature humidity bias. After 1000 hours, the typical drift is about 200ppm, which is 1/5 of the specified limit.
This is the same for thermal shock. The typical drift is 200ppm after 1000 cycles, which is 1/5 of the specified limit.
High temperature exposure produces similar results. The typical drift is about 200ppm after 1000 hours, 1/5 of the specified limit.
Summarizing the strengths of the PRG series: Typically PRG offers ¼ the size for the same power rating compared to other chip resistors. It maintains thin film chip resistor characteristics and offers superior performance when compared to thick film counterparts. And it is part of the RG family providing the best performance and reliability when compared to other thin film chip resistors.
Here is a typical application list for the PRG series, Susumu’s high power resistors. Wherever there is a need for high power in addition to excellent performance and reliability, the PRG series is the answer.
The PRG series is the newest member of Susumu’s RG family offering high power capability and long side terminals. It maintains the original RG series’ performance and reliability but its power handling capability is almost quadrupled. With the PRG series, customers have a choice among three members of the RG family. The original RG series is best for general applications where high precision/high reliability is required. Where extreme long-term stability and reliability are required, Susumu offers the URG series. For high power with no compromise in performance and reliability, the PRG series is the best choice.
